Paper Doll
My recommendation this week is The Mills Brothers' paper
doll. I have to say, when I heard this song for the first time in class, I was
amazed by its tune, even though I didn't understand the lyrics carefully at the
time, I immediately searched and liked this song after class. I like the vibe
of the whole song, especially the first minute. After reading the lyrics, I was
saddened again and wondered why the author wrote it this way. After searching,
Wikipedia told me that this is a sad love story. The lyrics "I'm gonna buy
a Paper Doll that I can call my own" and "I'd rather have a Paper
Doll to call my own" echo each other, which left a deep impression on me,
reflecting the author's experience in the mood after the failure of love, and
his desire for a "doll" of his own. The ending "Than have a
fickle-minded real live girl" will make me feel that the author shows
disappointment in love and a feeling of powerlessness, and wants to have a
"doll" that will not be taken away by others. Dolls are not just
dolls here. It means his girlfriend. Overall, the song presents a sad, heavy
atmosphere.
This is a great analyze! I also really enjoyed the tune and vibe of this song. However, I had no clue how deep this kind of weird song was. I am glad you took time to read the lyrics and share with us what it meant.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you looked at and analyzed the lyrics. It's interesting how songs sometimes have lyrics that seem a little strange but when you figure out what they mean you get a while new perspective on the song. I also like the description of a sad and heavy atmosphere.
